25th Lacemaker’s Day
On 27th, 28th and 29th of April, 2012, the Mediterranean seaside town of Arenys de Mar will host one of the most important events in the world of lacemaking. More than 3.000 lacemakers will gather at the main street of the town to show the secrets of this art which has over four hundred years of history in our country. Besides this meeting, there will also be a number of different activities such as a fashion show, International Lacemaking Fair, workshops, exhibitions, craft stalls or guided tours.
Arenys de Mar is one of the most important European towns regarding the bobbin lace. The town has encouraged the tradition since the 17th century and houses —at the Museu Marès de la Punta (Marès Lace Museum)— one of the most prestigious bobbin and needle lace collections in Europe.
We are looking forward to share those events with you.
International Lacemaking Fair
You will be able to discover laces from other European countries such as Italy, Portugal, France or Poland, from different parts of Spain as for example Camariñas and from other Catalan regions. Some of the hand-made laces will be put up for sale.
Exhibition in the Marès Lace Museum
The laces of the Chapel of Sant Jordi
The Museu Marès de la Punta (Marès Lace Museum) will open an exhibition of bobbin laces made in Arenys the Mar between 1927 and 1929 for the Palau de la Generalitat —the seat of the Catalan presidency and government. The pieces are considered to be masterpieces of the textile art in Catalonia.
Reflection’s Day on the handmade laces sector
People will gather to discuss and reflect on the current situation and problems of this sector: its trade, its international spread, its formative process…
Fashion show
There will be a fashion show dedicated to the Mediterranean spirit carried out by young designers of the town in collaboration with the Associació de Puntaires Flor d’Alba of Arenys de Mar. During the show an expert jury will reveal the winner of the 1st Condor Contest of handmade laces of children’s ceremony socks.
Lacemaker’s Day
It consists on a meeting in the center of Arenys with over 3.000 lacemakers who, throughout the whole morning, will show their delicate work.
